Wolfgang Van Halen Discusses “Nepo Baby” Label
Wolfgang Van Halen, the son of the late rock legend Eddie Van Halen and actress Valerie Bertinelli, recently shared his thoughts on the term “nepo baby.”
In an interview with Metal Hammer, he described the label as somewhat “unfair,” suggesting it diminishes a person’s individuality.
The term typically refers to the children of famous figures in entertainment who often have advantages due to their last name.
“I can voice my opinion, but I think calling someone a ‘nepo baby’ overlooks their uniqueness,” he remarked.
At 34, Wolfgang replaced Michael Anthony in Van Halen when he was just 15, going on to tour with the band from 2006 until 2020, which concluded after his father’s death from throat cancer at 65.
After Eddie’s passing, Van Halen disbanded.
While discussing nepotism, Wolfgang mentioned Jack Quaid, the son of Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan, pointing out, “People call him one of the ‘good guys,’ but who’s making that call?”
Jack Quaid debuted in 2012’s The Hunger Games and continued to build his career with roles in “The Boys,” “Oppenheimer,” and “Scream.”
He added, “I won’t name names, but this happens sometimes— even individuals lacking real talent can coast on their connections.”
“All I’m trying to do is be myself and establish my artistic integrity,” he said. Wolfgang expressed that every day, he aims to build his own legacy. He hopes to sell out a show at the Hollywood Bowl, where he last performed with his dad.
Wolfgang contributed to Van Halen’s final album, “A Different Kind of Truth,” released in 2012. He also played bass for Tremonti on their 2012 tour before officially joining the band and contributing to their albums “Cauterize” and “Dust.”
He later launched his solo project under the name Mammoth WVH, where he wrote and performed all the instruments on his debut album. The song “Distance” was even nominated for a Grammy.
He followed up with two more albums, “Mammoth II” in 2023 and “The End” in 2025.
Wolfgang also appears on the “Barbie” soundtrack and performed alongside Ryan Gosling at the 2024 Academy Awards.
In October 2023, Wolfgang married his longtime partner, Andria Allsop, after eight years together.
Last year, he opened up on Billy Corgan’s podcast about his father, reflecting on the challenges of losing him. As the fourth anniversary of Eddie’s passing approaches, Wolfgang noted that the absence still weighs heavily on him.
He expressed sadness over moments his father missed, like his wedding and future milestones. Despite the void, Wolfgang believes his father would have been proud and acknowledges the support he receives from his mother and wife in dealing with insecurities.
