Sliwa and Cuomo caution that AOC's district may expand under Mamdani

Concerns Over Prostitution in AOC’s District Amid Mayoral Race

Curtis Sliwa and Andrew Cuomo have raised alarms about the ongoing prostitution issues in Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s district. They warn that if Zoran Mamdani is elected mayor, the situation could worsen and lead to an increase in vice citywide.

The sex trade along Roosevelt Avenue has been described as akin to a “red light district,” with women soliciting in broad daylight and gang violence affecting local residents. The FBI has previously noted that tackling violent crime and prostitution is a priority for them.

This issue became a focal point in a recent mayoral debate, particularly after Mamdani’s past support for decriminalizing prostitution was called into question by Cuomo.

Mamdani, currently leading the race after surprising victory over Cuomo in the Democratic primary, has faced criticism for backing proposals to ease prostitution laws. Detractors argue that this could exacerbate the already chaotic streets.

During his time as a state lawmaker, Mamdani co-sponsored Cecilia’s Law, which would decriminalize certain prostitution offenses. He has publicly advocated for the decriminalization of sex work for nearly five years, highlighting his belief that “sex work is work.”

Sliwa contends that Mamdani’s potential mayorship would pave the way for greater prostitution and human trafficking throughout the city. He fears the reputation of Roosevelt Avenue as a lawless place could solidify further.

“If he takes office, I genuinely think this will expand throughout New York City,” Sliwa stated in an interview.

He elaborated, “What we see happening in areas like East Elmhurst and Jackson Heights is evident—open prostitution, often involving women who have been trafficked.” Sliwa accurately noted Mamdani’s call for decriminalizing sex work.

After facing accusations from Cuomo about his stance on legalizing prostitution during the debate, Mamdani attempted to distance himself from those previous claims. It’s important to note that decriminalizing prostitution means it wouldn’t be a crime, whereas legalizing it involves the government regulating it.

Mamdani’s Influence on NYPD Policies

Though as mayor Mamdani may not have the authority to change laws on decriminalization (as this happens at the state level), he could influence enforcement. His campaign rhetoric has sometimes hinted at a potential softening of these policies.

In the debate, he insisted, “I have never called for the legalization of prostitution, nor do I support not enforcing laws against misdemeanors.” However, if elected, he could appoint the NYPD chief and steer the department’s direction regarding crime enforcement along Roosevelt Avenue. Critics argue this could send a message to traffickers about a perceived easing of the laws.

Cuomo’s campaign firmly opposes decriminalization and promises to focus resources on tackling human trafficking, while supporting victims.

“The situation on Roosevelt Avenue is spiraling out of control,” said Cuomo’s spokesman, adding that Mamdani would worsen the already dire circumstances.

As Mr. Sliwa and Mr. Cuomo seek to address crime concerns, Sliwa pointed out how both Mamdani and Cuomo have contributed to the proliferation of the sex industry in the area.

Mamdani was part of the initiative that repealed a law against loitering for prostitution, which critics say targeted marginalized groups. Sliwa argues Cuomo’s actions contradict his harsh criticism of Mamdani.

Cuomo’s spokesman insisted the law had little relevance to prostitution enforcement.

If elected, Sliwa has already laid out an aggressive enforcement plan that includes closing brothels and prosecuting pimps. He believes that corruption within the NYPD allows this issue to persist.

“We’ll lock up those responsible and they’ll cooperate against corrupt police,” Sliwa promised, highlighting the need for more officers to combat these issues effectively.

Local voices, like Ramses Frias, a City Council candidate, express deep concern over what a Mamdani win could mean. “If he goes through with his platform, it will only get worse,” Frias conveyed, mentioning the stark realities in the area, including children encountering brothels on their way to school.

Christopher Reia, from the FBI’s New York office, mentioned active efforts in the area with community members expected to see some law enforcement action soon, although it’s unclear what the outcomes will be.

The NYPD claims progress is being made along Roosevelt Avenue after initiating Operation Roosevelt. They report a drop in crime by 34.7% this year and a significant number of arrests related to prostitution.

A spokesperson from the NYPD emphasized ongoing efforts to improve community safety and the revitalization of the area.
