Commanders’ Frankie Luvu Suspended for Repeated Violations
It was the tackle that pushed it over the edge.
Frankie Luvu, linebacker for the Washington Commanders, has been suspended for one game without pay, as declared by the NFL on Monday. This decision comes after he violated player safety rules multiple times.
The 29-year-old player clocked in his third hip-drop tackle of the season during the first quarter of a hefty 38-14 loss against the Seattle Seahawks on “Sunday Night Football.”
Using No. 4 on his jersey, Luvu was seen tackling Jackson Smith-Njigba, wrapping his arms around the Seattle receiver before bringing him to the ground—an infringement of NFL Rule 12.2.18.
Luvu had already faced fines for similar infractions in Week 4 against the Atlanta Falcons and Week 8 against the Chicago Bears.
As an eight-year veteran in the NFL, he made 50 tackles, including two sacks and four tackles for loss in his second season with Washington. He reportedly aims to appeal his suspension, as mentioned by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
If the suspension stands, Luvu will lose a game check of $508,333 and miss the upcoming Week 10 home game versus the Detroit Lions.
The Commanders (3-6) are already struggling after facing injuries against Seattle.
In addition to Luvu’s situation, cornerback Marshon Lattimore has torn his ACL, wide receiver Luke McCaffrey broke his collarbone, and star quarterback Jaden Daniels dislocated his elbow during play. Moreover, two-time Pro Bowler Terry McLaurin, who has only played four games this season due to a quadriceps issue, is also expected to sit out the next match.
