Cardinals Coach Stands by Kyler Murray as Starter
Jonathan Gannon seems puzzled by the opinions of commentators Troy Aikman and Joe Buck.
Despite Jacoby Brissett’s standout performance in the past three games, Gannon declared that Kyler Murray will continue as the Cardinals’ starting quarterback. Brissett, notably, guided the team to a 27-17 win against the Cowboys on Monday Night Football after two narrow losses to the Colts and Packers.
Yet, Gannon maintained: “Nothing has changed” regarding the Cardinals’ quarterback situation, as reported by ESPN.com.
When pressed for reasons behind his decision, he simply said, “That’s how I feel.”
Murray had been sidelined with a sprained foot since Week 5 against the Titans, missing two games and the week leading up to the Dallas match. The 28-year-old returned to practice but was later placed on Arizona’s inactive list.
Adam Schefter from ESPN expressed some curiosity about the situation, noting that Murray still has two years left on his contract. “That’s interesting, but we’re not there yet. It might be interesting, maybe next offseason,” he said during a segment on “The Pat McAfee Show.”
In the ESPN booth, Buck and Aikman were in agreement, suggesting that Brissett should be the primary starter for the struggling 3-5 Cardinals. Buck even remarked, “I don’t know how you’re going to get him off the field,” according to Cardinals reporter Theo McKee.
Aikman added his own skepticism, saying, “I don’t know how they can do it, and I don’t know if they would do it.” It’s worth noting that while Brissett has stepped up, he’s traditionally been seen as a backup quarterback, playing for various teams over the last six seasons.
This season, Brissett has completed 73 of 112 passes for 860 yards, with six touchdowns and only one interception. When asked how he plans to keep the starting role, Brissett replied, “I just think it’s our team and our offense. We’re starting to grow together and taking it one play, one game, one week at a time. I couldn’t be more proud of these guys.”
After the victory, the Cardinals ended a five-game losing streak and will be up against the Seahawks this coming Sunday.
