Steelers Sign Receiver Familiar to Aaron Rodgers
The Pittsburgh Steelers made a move to strengthen their offense on Tuesday by signing wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling, who has a connection to two-time Super Bowl champion quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Valdes-Scantling has been added to the practice squad.
Previously, he played for the San Francisco 49ers, participating in five games before being placed on injured reserve due to an injury. The 49ers released him on October 18.
Valdes-Scantling’s football journey began at North Carolina State University and then at South Florida. In the 2018 NFL Draft, he was chosen by the Green Bay Packers in the fifth round, where he notably earned the attention of Rodgers during their time together on the field.
After spending four years with the Packers, he joined the Kansas City Chiefs and celebrated two Super Bowl wins alongside Patrick Mahomes. Last season, he also had stints with the Buffalo Bills and the New Orleans Saints.
This veteran receiver boasts impressive statistics, totaling 209 catches for 3,606 yards and 20 touchdowns. He currently leads all active players with an average of 17.3 yards per catch, surpassing former Steelers wide receiver George Pickens, who has an average of 16.2 yards per catch.
In a related move, Pittsburgh released defensive back Beanie Bishop from its practice squad on Monday.
As for the receiving options available to Rodgers, he now has a variety of players including DK Metcalf, Calvin Austin III, Scottie Miller, Ben Skowronek, Keshawn Williams, and Roman Wilson to work with.
