Virginia’s Next Lieutenant Governor
The Democratic state senator Ghazala Hashmi is projected to become Virginia’s next lieutenant governor. Hashmi, who hails from Hyderabad, India, grew up in Georgia and most recently represented Chesterfield County in the Virginia State Senate.
With a doctorate in American literature from Emory University, she has highlighted her background as an educator throughout her campaign. Hashmi has taught at both the University of Richmond and J. Sargent Reynolds Community College, where she was the founding director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.
Interestingly, Hashmi stood out in the race as she repeatedly declined invitations to debate her opponent. John Reed, a Richmond broadcaster, responded by creating a 45-minute mock debate video that featured an AI portrayal of her public policy views.
Hashmi is a historic figure, being the first South Asian to serve in the Virginia state senate. She is set to preside over the Senate, a position that will mark her prominence as lieutenant governor, especially in a narrowly Democratic-controlled environment.
Her campaign emphasized key Democratic issues, advocating for public education, expanding Medicaid, and upholding abortion rights. She also expressed concerns over climate change, environmental protection, and affordable housing.
Hashmi has indicated a desire to lead efforts in repealing Virginia’s “right to work” law, which makes union membership optional for certain workers. Additionally, she foresaw a challenging relationship with former President Donald Trump, labeling his potential second term as “worse than his first” and criticizing his associations.
