Mikie Sherrill secures victory in New Jersey governor election, beats Ciattarelli

Mikie Sherrill Poised to Become New Jersey’s Next Governor

The Fox News Decision Desk has forecasted that Mikie Sherrill, a Democratic Representative from New Jersey, is likely to win the governorship, avoiding a contentious dispute against Republican candidate Jack Ciatarelli.

Sherrill aims to replace term-limited Governor Phil Murphy, emerging victorious in a closely watched campaign.

Since 2019, Sherrill has represented New Jersey’s 11th congressional district, flipping it from Republican control during the 2018 Blue Wave election amidst President Trump’s first term. She made headlines as the first woman to represent a suburban area in northern New Jersey.

“We’ve witnessed rallies with thousands of attendees, and early and mail-in voting looks promising,” Sherrill expressed with confidence after casting her vote on Election Day. “I think I’m in a good position today.”

New Jersey Democrats focused their campaigns on critical issues, especially the affordability crisis in a state infamous for its high taxes. Throughout her campaign, Sherrill committed to reducing living costs for families, vowing to combat “price gouging” and advocate for lower taxes, healthcare, and energy expenses.

Additionally, she pledged to safeguard abortion access, boost housing construction to meet diverse needs during the housing crisis, and bridge the educational gaps in New Jersey’s public schools—especially those that struggled post-pandemic.

“I’ll bring a different perspective to the governor’s office because of my unique background,” Sherrill told voters in her initial remarks ahead of the second gubernatorial debate. “As a Navy pilot, federal prosecutor, legislator, and mother of four, my focus will be on making New Jersey more affordable for you. I will always stand up for you.”

Sherrill, a Naval Academy graduate and former Sea King helicopter pilot, served over nine years in active duty, retiring as a lieutenant in 2003 before pursuing a law degree. She briefly worked as a prosecutor before entering politics, serving in the U.S. Attorney’s Office in New Jersey in 2015.

After securing her place in the Democratic primary against her opponent in June, Sherrill encountered Ciatarelli, a former CPA and medical publishing executive who has served as a state representative. Ciatarelli previously ran for governor in 2017 and narrowly missed ousting Murphy four years ago.

As the campaign progressed, Ciatarelli made strides to narrow the gap against Sherrill but couldn’t sway the state toward Republican control.

New Jersey and Virginia are the only two states with gubernatorial elections following a presidential year, historically serving as indicators for midterm trends. In 2025, this election was seen, partly, as a referendum on Trump’s distinct second-term agenda.

Despite long-standing Democratic dominance in both federal and state elections, Republicans have remained competitive, winning five of the last ten gubernatorial races. The state seemed vulnerable to a Republican shift after Trump decreased his 2020 loss margin from 16 to just 6 points in 2024, even flipping some traditionally red counties.

Throughout a particularly contentious and divisive campaign, the candidates clashed during two fall debates, often escalating tensions. Notably, the New Jersey Democratic Party faced scrutiny when it came to light that the U.S. Naval Academy had barred Sherrill from attending her graduation amidst a cheating scandal. Sherrill vehemently condemned the report’s release, asserting that her refusal to report classmates involved in the incident led to her ban from graduating.

Sherrill also dealt with potential defamation lawsuits from Ciatarelli, who accused her of spreading “propaganda” regarding opioid safety leading to widespread deaths in New Jersey. Ciatarelli labeled the claims as “baseless” but ultimately refrained from pursuing legal action before Election Day.

The inauguration for the new governor is set for January 20. However, Sherrill has not indicated if she will relocate to Drumthwacket, the historic governor’s residence in Princeton, New Jersey. When asked about the timing of a special legislative election to fill her congressional seat, Sherrill replied, “Our focus right now is entirely on this election. We’ll coordinate with House leadership to ensure a smooth transition for New Jersey residents.”
