Insights from CNN’s Election Night Coverage
During CNN’s election night reporting, Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-N.Y.) emphasized that the Republican Party should consider adopting a more centrist approach. She remarked, “I think we need to move a little more centrist, and I think that’s what we should learn from tonight.” Malliotakis highlighted that the party’s actions regarding individuals without criminal records—especially those who have been in the U.S. for decades and contribute to society—may backfire. “It’s counterproductive,” she noted, adding that Republicans should better communicate their accomplishments.
Malliotakis, who identifies as half-Hispanic and belongs to the Republican Hispanic Caucus, argued that the focus should be on criminal elements rather than long-term residents with American citizen children. “The president is certainly securing the border and deporting criminals,” she said, but emphasized the need to prioritize those who pose a genuine threat.
Host Anderson Cooper probed a statement from President Trump regarding the definition of criminals as domestic illegals. He asked, “He ran with the worst of the worst, and there was a lot of support for that. Do you think some of that was tarnished because of the image of mothers being ripped away from their children?”
Malliotakis responded that a harsh approach could alienate Hispanic voters. “I don’t think the pendulum should swing too far, or we’re going to lose the Hispanic vote,” she remarked. She continued, asserting that the focus should remain on gang members and drug traffickers, rather than those who have contributed positively to society.
Cooper later asked Malliotakis if she believed there was a denial of broader issues. To this, she reiterated that since the president has taken action to secure the borders, other pressing issues have been overlooked. She pointed out improvements like reduced inflation and interest rates but stressed the need for the party to avoid swinging too far to the right. “I think we need to move a little more towards the middle,” she suggested, while also highlighting the importance of communicating Republican successes, including tax cuts for families.
Earlier in the discussion, Malliotakis had mentioned that federal employees in Virginia may feel dissatisfaction with the Trump administration. She also indicated that New Jersey’s election dynamics might play a more significant role than those in Virginia, suggesting a positive outlook for Republicans there.
