Former Lawyer Critiques Hulu Series on His Family’s Tragedy

A former South Carolina attorney, now disgraced and convicted for the murders of his wife and son, has expressed strong criticism towards a new drama that portrays these events in a sensational manner.

The Hulu limited series titled “Murdaugh: Death in the Family” explores the rise and fall of Alex Murdaugh, depicting the harrowing moments before and after the violent deaths of his wife, Maggie, and their teenage son, Paul, who were shot with a shotgun.

Following the series premiere, Murdaugh publicly condemned how his family’s tragic story was dramatized.

His legal team issued a statement expressing their “deep disappointment and upset” regarding the Hulu series, claiming it misrepresents Murdaugh’s relationships with his wife and son.

“The program is filled with misleading and inaccurate statements that twist the truth of their lives,” the statement reads.

It added that Murdaugh’s relationship with Maggie and Paul is depicted in a manner that misrepresents the genuine affection he has for them.

Moreover, Murdaugh asserts that the creators of the show did not consult his family or legal representatives during production to accurately portray their experiences.

“Equally troubling is the apparent lack of effort by producers and actors to grasp the true essence of the individuals involved,” the statement continued.

His team pointed out that no one from Hulu reached out to Murdaugh, his surviving son Buster, or any family members or attorneys for their insights or to verify facts. Instead, it appears the series heavily relies on sensationalized accounts from external sources lacking direct knowledge of the family.

As of now, Hulu has not provided a response to inquiries regarding the series.

On June 7, 2021, Murdaugh made a frantic 911 call, claiming that Maggie and Paul had been shot on their property near a dog kennel. However, the narrative shifted as prosecutors unveiled his extensive financial crimes and the cover-up of these actions, which ultimately led to his indictment.

In the lead-up to Murdaugh’s trial, investigators compiled numerous charges, revealing that he had stolen millions from clients and families of victims to fuel a painkiller addiction.

Mark Tinsley, an attorney involved in the criminal proceedings, remarked on the difficulty some might have in reconciling the image of Murdaugh they thought they knew with the reality of his actions.

In March of 2023, a South Carolina jury found him guilty of double murder, resulting in two life sentences, which he is currently serving in a maximum-security prison. He was also sentenced to an additional 40 years for unrelated financial crimes.

Despite the ongoing popularity of the series, Murdaugh urges potential viewers to approach it skeptically, emphasizing that it does not accurately reflect his family or the events being sensationalized.
