Jewish Organizations Respond to Mamdani’s Mayoral Victory
On Tuesday night, following Zoran Mamdani’s surprising win in the New York City mayoral race, Jewish organizations expressed their determination to hold him accountable in his new role.
“Tonight, the quiet normalization of anti-Semitism became very loud,” remarked Sarah Forman, executive director of the New York Solidarity Network. She emphasized that Mamdani’s past work has been rife with coded language regarding Jews, performative boycotts, and open hostility toward Israel.
“Now, with a platform as mayor, his views could significantly influence the largest Jewish community outside of Israel,” she noted.
The New York State United Jewish Board of Appeals, along with other prominent Jewish organizations, released a joint statement underscoring their concerns. They stressed, “We cannot overlook the fact that the mayor-elect’s fundamental beliefs conflict with our community’s most cherished values.”
“Our agenda is clear,” they stated. “We will hold all elected officials, including Mayor-elect Mamdani, entirely responsible for ensuring that New York remains a place where Jewish life and support for Israel are safeguarded and can flourish.”
They also committed to remaining vigilant against the increasing tide of anti-Semitism and hate crimes, asserting their intention to vocally condemn rhetoric and actions that undermine Israel or excuse anti-Semitism.
Mamdani, who is 34 years old, faced frequent criticism for his anti-Israel stance during the campaign but ultimately won decisively, capturing 50.4% of the vote against former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s 41.6%. The leading Republican candidate, Curtis Sliwa, garnered only 7.1%.
