Trump Compares Democrats to Kamikaze Pilots Amid Shutdown
During a recent breakfast at the White House with Republican senators, President Donald Trump drew a controversial analogy, likening Democrats to kamikaze pilots from World War II. This comment came shortly after his trip to Asia, which included a visit to Japan, and coincided with the conclusion of the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, lasting 36 days.
“I think they’re kamikaze pilots,” Trump remarked, highlighting his concerns about the Democrats’ intentions. “I came back from Japan and spoke about the suicide bombers. I think they are suicide bombers. If necessary, they will defeat the country.”
He expressed his belief that the Democrats weren’t adequately shouldering their share of the blame for the prolonged shutdown.
Democrats Face Challenges Amid Ongoing Shutdown
Trump indicated that the situation was primarily caused by the Democrats, asserting, “This was created by the Democrats, and I don’t think they’re getting the blame they deserve.” He stressed the need for the government to reopen promptly.
The deadlock arose from disagreements between Senate Republicans and Democrats over a short-term funding bill intended to keep the government running until November 21. This stalemate was fueled by disputes over health care provisions included in potential funding options. Republicans argue that the Democrats aim to extend health care to undocumented immigrants, particularly through provisions that would reverse elements of Trump’s prior tax and domestic policy changes.
Democrats Push for Health Care Subsidies
In contrast, Democrats maintain that their focus is on permanently extending certain Affordable Care Act subsidies set to expire at the end of 2025.
Trump also suggested that the shutdown played a role in recent Republican losses in key elections, such as gubernatorial contests in Virginia and New Jersey. Reflecting on the situation, he noted, “Exactly one year ago, we won a big and beautiful victory.” Following the departure of the press, he intended to discuss the implications of the shutdown and its importance.
Citing polls, Trump remarked that the government shutdown likely had a negative impact on the Republican Party’s recent performance, attributing it to their losses.
Senate Democrats Stand Firm Against Funding Bill
Meanwhile, Senate Democrats on Tuesday declined to back the Republicans’ temporary funding bill aimed at reopening the government. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer emphasized that his party is unwilling to support legislation that does not extend the Affordable Care Act subsidies.
“It seems like the only plan Republicans have for health care is to abolish it and then tell working people to figure it out for themselves,” Schumer stated. “That’s not a medical plan. That’s cruel.”
