Frankie Muniz discusses leaving Hollywood and the return of 'Malcolm in the Middle'

Frankie Muniz Makes a Return to Hollywood

Frankie Muniz is stepping back into the spotlight. After capturing hearts as a child star on the FOX sitcom “Malcolm in the Middle,” which ran two decades ago, he took a significant turn in his career when the show ended in 2006. Muniz shifted his focus away from acting to pursue a career in professional racing.

Now, at 39, he’s gearing up to reprise his role for a revival of “Malcolm in the Middle,” reflecting on the pivotal choices he made during his earlier years.

“Back in 2006, I was coming off the end of ‘Malcolm’ at the peak of my career,” Muniz stated in an exclusive interview. He noted that he had various movie offers at that time but decided to follow his passion for racing. “I had this unique chance to race cars professionally,” he recalled.

“Acting was the only thing I did from age 8 to 22. I enjoyed it, but that desire to try something different, it tugged at me,” Muniz shared. He mentioned expressing to his agent and manager, “No matter what offers come in, I really want to pursue this.” The feeling that if he didn’t fully commit, he might regret it pushed him forward.

When asked if he feels his decision to pursue racing over acting was the right one, Muniz admitted, “I can’t say for certain. Who knows what might’ve happened if I’d stayed in entertainment? But right now, I’m exactly where I want to be.”

“Looking back, I can recognize both my good choices and mistakes—everything has shaped my journey. It feels mentally good,” he added. “While I love being a race car driver, returning to act in the Malcolm reboot has reignited my passion for acting as well.”

Muniz acknowledged that gaining perspective took time. “I’m more appreciative of life now. Each opportunity excites me, whether it’s reprising Malcolm or taking on a new role,” he remarked.

He will be making his NASCAR debut in 2023 as a full-time racer. Interestingly enough, after a fall that left him with a broken wrist, he missed a few races but returned to competition in October.

In the past few years, Muniz has also returned to acting, scoring parts in “The Rookie,” “New Amsterdam,” and co-starring in the 2025 film “Renner.” He is set to reprise his infamous role in “Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Unfair,” a four-episode revival coming to Disney+ in 2026. Familiar faces will join him, including Jane Kaczmarek and Bryan Cranston.

He expressed some nerves about returning to the character that launched his career but quickly felt at home. “When I revisited the show with my wife in 2017, I’d never watched it before! We binge-watched all 151 episodes, and she turned to me at the end, joking that I was just being myself,” he shared with a laugh.

Although the entire cast hadn’t reunited since the show ended, Muniz felt as if they had picked up right where they left off. “Justin, who played Reese, took a break from acting but stepped right back into the role,” he mentioned, speaking about the seamless transition. He was impressed but unsurprised by Cranston’s professionalism and dedication.

“Reboot discussions began over a decade ago, and we wanted to gauge the interest of the cast early on,” Muniz remarked. He acknowledged that Eric Perr Sullivan, who played Dewey, decided long ago to step away from acting entirely, a choice they respect completely.

“He’s really content with his life outside entertainment, and we would never want to force him back into something he doesn’t want to do,” Muniz explained. While he hopes fans understand, he’s thrilled to work with Cranston again. “Whenever people ask about my favorite actors, it’s always Bryan. His commitment is unmatched, and he’s genuine and kind to everyone on set, which inspires me to be the same way.”

Muniz concluded with admiration for Cranston’s post-“Malcolm” success, stating, “He’s truly deserving of everything he’s achieved since.”
