Parents group submits complaint to DOE regarding Title IX breaches at Princeton

A prominent parental rights organization has lodged a formal complaint with the U.S. Department of Education, claiming that Princeton University may be violating Title IX. The allegation centers around the university allegedly compelling female students to spread out their cubicles and share “gender-neutral” bathrooms.

The complaint suggests that Princeton, contrary to federal law, has set up 250 “unisex” restrooms, offers single-sex dorms, and provides gender hormone replacement therapy to students. This allegation, gathered by Fox News Digital, indicates that the policies in place at Princeton’s two colleges, Yea College and New College West, may violate Title IX by mandating that over 500 students use gender-neutral restrooms equipped with multiple stalls, which necessitates passing through shared spaces to access these facilities.

The complaint notes that Princeton University “randomly assigns” first-year students to different residential colleges, meaning those students are unable to opt out of using communal restrooms. This effectively forces female students into situations where they could encounter male students in various states of undress, raising concerns about safety and privacy.

According to statements from students reported in 2025, some voiced feeling “uncomfortable” and “unsafe” due to the bathroom policy. The organization Defending Education has criticized this approach, stating that the concept of biological sex at Princeton has become distorted.

The complaint also calls attention to commencement practices at Princeton, highlighting two ceremonies: the “Rose Graduation,” which honors women’s achievements, and the “Lavender Graduation,” celebrating the accomplishments of queer and transgender individuals.

The letter requests that Princeton take immediate action to rectify these alleged violations of federal law and urges the Department of Education to investigate these policies. Fox News Digital has reach out to Princeton University for a response.

Sarah Parshall Perry, a legal fellow at Defending Education, noted Princeton’s historical significance, calling its legacy into question given the current policy framework. She highlighted that while Princeton aims to promote itself as a “transgender-friendly” institution, its existing policies appear to contradict federal guidelines, infringing upon the rights of female students to have equal educational opportunities.

This situation has broader implications, as it comes in the context of various moves from the Trump administration regarding education policy, including reviews of diversity, equity, and inclusion practices in federally funded institutions.

The issues surrounding the situation at Princeton University illustrate a significant tension between evolving social policies and established legal standards, which may leave many, on both sides of the debate, feeling uneasy about the future.
