Town in Pennsylvania Chooses Transgender Mayor

Residents of Downingtown, Chester County, Pennsylvania, have chosen a new mayor who identifies as a woman.

Democrat Erica Deuso declared victory over Republican Richard Bryant in the mayoral election early Wednesday morning.

“The numbers were clear tonight,” Deuso stated. “We won. Voters opted for hope, decency, and a community where each neighbor matters. I am honored to be Pennsylvania’s first openly transgender mayor, and I take on this role with great care and purpose.”

“This win is not about just one person. It represents what happens when we choose progress over fear, facts over noise, and results over excuses,” Deuso added. “Leadership should be compassionate, practical, and focused on effective solutions.”

Deuso identifies herself on her X profile as a “process efficiency expert” and an advocate for fair labor, education, gender equality, and LGBTQ+ rights, preferring the pronouns “she” and “her.”

In a previous run for state representative in Chester County District 155, Deuso shared her experiences, mentioning, “Despite encountering childish homophobia and transphobia during my schooling, I didn’t personally experience hatred from my peers.” She expressed disappointment over the rise of right-wing extremism in her former school district, likening it to a regression to past attitudes.

According to a local publication, Deuso developed a passion for socialized medicine while studying in Copenhagen and supports what some refer to as “gender-affirming” care, which includes hormone therapy and surgeries. “This has been a journey to understand health care and the challenges faced by me and others in the LGBTQ community regarding access,” she noted.

Recently, she faced criticism after suggesting potential armed violence could occur in response to the government’s actions on illegal immigration.

As mayor, Deuso will manage the town’s six-member council.

This news coincides with Pennsylvania’s decision to retain three Democratic Supreme Court justices, ensuring a continued left-leaning majority in the state’s Supreme Court.
