Warning Issued After Mamdani’s Victory
In the wake of Zoran Mamdani’s election as the new mayor of New York, the head of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has raised alarms, labeling him a “clear and imminent danger” to the Jewish community and pledging to hold him accountable.
“Many Jewish New Yorkers are understandably concerned,” remarked ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt in a recent appearance on Fox News Radio.
Mamdani, who officially won the mayoral race on Tuesday night, successfully ran against notable figures including former governors Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa. As a self-identified democratic socialist, he faces significant criticism due to previous comments his opponents have described as anti-Semitic.
“As Jews, we’ve learned over time to take people at their word,” Greenblatt emphasized Wednesday. He expressed worry that Mamdani’s statements might create a more hostile environment for Jewish people in New York.
His concerns are heightened by the increasing rates of anti-Semitism in the city, which have led to widespread anxiety following Mamdani’s electoral success. The 34-year-old former state lawmaker from Queens has been under fire for not condemning the phrase “globalizing the intifada,” often linked with violent protests against Israel.
Mamdani’s actions have also drawn criticism, particularly a photo taken with Imam Shirazi Wahadj, a figure responsible for organizing the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and known for supporting convicted terrorists.
In response to Mamdani’s new role, the ADL has initiated various programs, including a platform for New Yorkers to report anti-Semitic incidents. Greenblatt urged, “If you experience anti-Semitism in any of your daily activities, please inform us, and we’ll ensure that necessary actions are taken.”
Furthermore, the ADL has launched the “Mamdani Monitor,” a system designed to track the mayor’s appointments and policies closely. “We will hold this man accountable,” Greenblatt reassured concerned citizens.
Mamdani has firmly denied the allegations of anti-Semitism, insisting that his critiques focus on the Israeli government rather than Jews as a whole. He previously stated intentions to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should he enter New York City, a position he reiterated during a recent television interview.
In the midst of ongoing conflict, the International Criminal Court has accused Netanyahu of “war crimes” in the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, a situation that has reportedly resulted in significant casualties in Gaza.
