Islanders Reflect on Recent Game and Penalty Kill Progress
On Wednesday, the Islanders found themselves hoping to extend their penalty kill streak just a bit longer. If Pavel Zacha hadn’t ended their run of 10 successful kills in the second period of Tuesday’s match against the Bruins, the team might have secured a couple of vital points rather than just one in a 4-3 shootout loss.
It’s worth acknowledging that the term “back-to-back penalty kill success” is quite a recent development for the Islanders, especially after years of struggles in this area. Their overall statistics this season may still lag behind the league average, but there seems to be a positive shift thanks to assistant coach Bob Boughner’s 4-on-5 strategy, and the team appears to be gaining ground gradually.
Coach Patrick Roy commented before Tuesday’s game, saying, “The big difference for me, of course, is confidence. We feel like we’re jumping fast and we’re very coordinated on the penalty kill.” He added that Boughner has been doing an excellent job, with players fully believing in his approach.
The Islanders have noticeably upped their aggression when it comes to denying opponents at the blue line, and they’re seizing opportunities for short-handed rushes. They seem to be on the right track.
Roy also pointed out the importance of making that first successful kill in a game, noting, “I feel like that really adds momentum to your game as well. We talked about it while we were playing in Boston last week—a couple of early penalties in the second period led to them scoring. If we can kill that, I think we can gain some momentum.”
Given the past few seasons, just having a reliable penalty kill would make the Islanders quite happy. If they had performed better in that area last season, they might have qualified for the playoffs.
While it’s still early days, there’s a sense of optimism that this time, things might be different.
The Islanders have their next game against the Wild on Friday, but they did not hold practice on Wednesday. Historically, they’ve struggled against Minnesota, with a 1-6-1 record in their last eight meetings, having been outscored 30-15.
