Ovechkin Scores Historic 900th Goal

NHL legend Alex Ovechkin made history on Wednesday night, becoming the first player in the league to hit the 900 goals milestone. However, the goaltender he scored against had a rather interesting reaction: he tried to conceal the puck.

Ovechkin netted his historic goal just 2:39 into the second period against the St. Louis Blues, with the puck coming off Jordan Binnington. Positioned at the bottom of the right circle, the Capitals winger quickly slid a backhand rebound from Jakob Chychrun past Binnington, who wasn’t able to get back in position in time.

The Capital’s bench erupted in celebration, marking the significant moment for the 40-year-old player. In a somewhat humorous twist, Binnington attempted to shove the milestone puck into his pants, likely hoping to prevent the Capitals from keeping it as a trophy.

After breaking Wayne Gretzky’s career record with his 895th goal in April, Ovechkin started this season needing just three more goals for the 900 mark. It had taken him a little while, going four games without a score, but he finally ended that drought on October 17th against Minnesota.

As he’s nearing the end of his contract, this may be one of the last major milestones Ovechkin reaches, as he’s still quite a bit away from the elusive 1,000 goals. He’s had quite a remarkable career, being a three-time MVP and nine-time leading scorer in the league.

Usually, Ovechkin has shown impressive consistency throughout his career, rarely sidelined by injuries. This has allowed him to hit milestones at more predictably spaced intervals, though he did take a bit longer than expected to transition from 800 to 900 goals.
