Concerns for Hugh Freeze’s Health Before Firing
Maddie Freeze, the daughter of ex-Auburn coach Hugh Freeze, expressed her worries about her father’s health leading up to his dismissal.
In a TikTok video, she shared that Hugh’s health has worsened since his early-stage prostate cancer diagnosis back in February.
He was allowed to continue coaching through the summer.
“In a way, there’s a personal sense of redemption here for me because I’ve seen my father’s health decline,” Maddie stated in her video. “It’s evident to others too; he’s just not well.”
She also mentioned, “I’m thankful that he finally got the surgery he needed, and it’s a relief that it was done in time for him to be healthy again.”
Maddie, a student at Auburn University, was a regular at Tigers games, sharing her experiences and the benefits of being a coach’s daughter on social media.
“We loved being part of Auburn, and the community made it clear that loving Auburn would mean Auburn would love you back,” she noted. “Unfortunately, that wasn’t our reality… We don’t harbor any ill will, but we do hope the school finds some spiritual guidance.”
This past season was challenging for Auburn, with a record of 1-5 in the conference and 4-5 overall.
The team stumbled, losing four consecutive games to ranked teams including Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Georgia, and Missouri, which really impacted their season.
Rumors suggested that Hugh upset some at the school by frequenting the golf course.
In his three seasons with the SEC team, he managed a record of 15-19, finishing his first two years with records of 6-7 and 5-7.
After his firing, the university issued a sincere message of appreciation for Hugh.
“Coach Freeze has shown integrity, and we value his commitment to Auburn as well as his relentless efforts over the past three years to improve our team,” the statement read.
“We have high expectations for Auburn football, aiming to compete for championships annually, and the search for the next head coach will commence immediately.”
Reports indicate that former Penn State coach James Franklin may also be interested in the Auburn coaching position.
