Michael Blake challenges Democratic Representative Ritchie Torres in the primary elections.

Former New York congressman Michael Blake is challenging incumbent pro-Israel Democratic Rep. Richie Torres for the 15th Congressional District. Blake, who previously served as vice chairman of the Democratic National Committee, stated, “I’m running for Congress because the people of the Bronx deserve better than Ritchie Torres.” He criticized Torres for his focus on Israel, saying, “While Richie is fighting for genocide, I am ready to fight for you and lower your cost of living.” Blake emphasized his commitment to affordable housing and community investment, contrasting it with what he perceives as Torres’ priorities.

A spokesperson for Torres responded, asserting that Blake is not genuinely interested in the Bronx and will likely lose the primary again. “There’s a reason why Bronx voters trust Ritchie Torres,” the spokesperson stated, highlighting Torres’ dedication to public housing and affordability issues while opposing Donald Trump.

Blake was the runner-up to Torres in the 2020 Democratic primary and later in the general election. Recently, he ran for mayor of New York City but didn’t succeed. His campaign presents him as a “consistent progressive,” while Torres has labeled himself a “pragmatic progressive.” The upcoming primary is shaping up to be another significant contest for these candidates.
