Zohran Mamdani Begins on a 'Rocky Note' Following 'Very Angry' Victory Speech

Trump Comments on New NYC Mayor’s Victory Speech

President Donald Trump has expressed concerns about the demeanor of new New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani, stating he is off to a “bad start” following Mamdani’s victory speech where he urged the president to “turn up the volume.”

In an interview with Fox News, Trump, reflecting on Mamdani’s speech, described it as “very angry” and pointedly noted that it seemed directed at him. When asked about Mamdani’s remark about needing to “break through everything” to connect with him and his supporters, Trump labeled that a “dangerous statement for him.”

Trump affirmed he had seen the speech, responding affirmatively to a question and emphasizing its angry tone. “He was certainly angry at me,” Trump remarked, adding that Mamdani should be courteous, considering the president’s influence on many decisions affecting him.

During his address, Mamdani had stated, “So, listen, President Trump, when I say this, to reach any of us, you’re going to have to go through all of us.”

In response to such comments, Trump reiterated that it was “very dangerous” for Mamdani to make those claims. He suggested that a lack of respect for Washington would hinder Mamdani’s potential success.

At the victory speech, notable figures like Mark Ruffalo and George Takei encouraged people to vote and directly challenged President Trump to “turn up the volume.” Mamdani, a Democrat, asserted, “If anyone can teach the people betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it’s the city that produced him.”

Trump’s remarks came after Mamdani’s win against former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa in the recent mayoral election.

Opinion polls prior to the election indicated Mamdani with a healthy lead over his competitors. One survey found that if it had come down to Mamdani and Cuomo, the latter would have garnered 49.7 percent support against Mamdani’s 44.1 percent.

Mamdani, whose parents include filmmaker Meera Nair and academic Mahmoud Mamdani, is an advocate for city-run grocery stores and opposes police responses to domestic disputes. He has also pledged to uphold the city’s sanctuary policies, emphasizing the rights of undocumented immigrants living in New York City.
