Greene Criticizes House Speaker Over Recess
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) expressed her frustrations regarding recent issues within her party on Wednesday, mentioning that she confronted House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) over what she labeled a “total failure” during the ongoing House recess.
“The House of Representatives has been inactive for six weeks, which is completely unacceptable,” Greene stated during an interview on NewsNation’s “The Hill.”
She added, “While everyone in America is going about their daily jobs, Mike Johnson isn’t allowing us to work here. It’s his responsibility.”
When Blake Berman asked Greene what she intended to communicate to Johnson, she said, “I’ll tell him exactly what I expressed during the Republican conference call last weekend.”
Berman pressed for details on that conversation, to which Greene replied, “I asked, ‘Where is our health care plan? It’s non-existent. The Democrats started this mess years ago, and we haven’t fixed it yet.’ I remarked that it’s pretty sad to take a break when we need to get back to work.”
As the government shutdown persists, tensions have risen since Speaker Johnson prevented the House from adjourning, causing concern among House Republicans about how to address their previous session’s shortcomings.
On Thursday, Johnson indicated he would not allow a vote among Democrats in the House regarding a deal to extend certain Affordable Care Act funding as part of efforts to resolve the government shutdown.
In recent weeks, Greene has been vocal about health care issues within her party, previously stating that “the subsidy concern is very real.”
She mentioned, “It’s hard to dismiss this as a hoax. For those with term or private plans, premiums are projected to rise by an average of 18 percent, which is concerning.”
In response, Johnson’s office acknowledged the criticism, with Johnson himself noting that he is accustomed to Greene’s feedback. “We have a strong rapport, as they say in the Deep South. She knows my door is always open for conversation,” he remarked in a recent interview.
