Trump Criticizes Democrats After Election Loss

WASHINGTON — In response to a significant loss for Republicans in Tuesday’s off-year election, President Trump took aim at Democrats on Thursday, accusing them of being “crooks” despite their claims of advocating for affordability.

“What the Democrats are doing is a lie,” Trump stated during an event in the Oval Office, emphasizing a recent agreement with pharmaceutical companies aimed at reducing the prices of weight-loss medications. “They just lost this election because they were supposedly focused on affordability. It’s a scam by the Democratic Party.”

Highlighting Walmart’s announcement that Thanksgiving meal kits would be around 25% cheaper than last year, Trump mentioned that the retail giant’s baskets serve an average of ten people for a cost of about $4 each—lower than last year’s eight-person option.

“Thanksgiving this year will be 25% less expensive than before,” he claimed, noting that this year’s meal kit contains 15 items, a reduction from 21 last year. Notably, it lacks some traditional items like pecan pie and sweet potatoes.

He expressed frustration with Republicans for not discussing affordability more openly, suggesting they rely too heavily on reporters for guidance. “They don’t have a grasp on affordability,” he remarked.

Trump’s comments reflect a growing concern among Republican officials regarding economic issues as they approach next year’s midterm elections, which could affect the political landscape during his remaining time in office.

Vivek Ramaswamy, the Republican gubernatorial candidate from Ohio, highlighted the importance of focusing on affordability, particularly after losses in elections in New Jersey and Virginia. He stated that making the “American Dream” more accessible is crucial, advocating for lower costs in essential areas like healthcare and housing.

Historically, Trump’s accusations of unfair treatment from Democrats have helped him maintain loyalty within his party, especially during turbulent events like his impeachments and various legal battles.

One Republican strategist pointed out that while affordability is a hot topic now, the underlying issue remains the economy. White House Deputy Chief of Staff James Blair noted that Trump is aware that improving the economy will take time but insists that progress is being made with respect to living costs.

In New York, incoming mayor Zoran Mamdani was commended for effectively addressing affordability issues. Comparatively, in Virginia, Republican candidate Winsome Sears lost significantly to Democratic Gov.-elect Abigail Spanberger, who focused more on pressing economic issues rather than divisive topics.

Trump, speaking in Miami, contrasted his successes with those of his opponents, characterizing their actions as deceptive. He defended his own record, stating that the current inflation rate is at 3%, significantly down from previous highs.

He pointed out wage increases for various labor sectors, asserting that the economic indicators indicate progress. Additionally, Trump claimed that gas prices have remained stable and hinted that they could drop even further, presenting a picture of a recovering economy.

“We’re making America affordable again, and it’s happening at a record pace,” he concluded, reiterating his commitment to addressing cost-of-living concerns.
