Republicans had a notable success in the suburban counties surrounding New York City, though they faced significant setbacks in other regions across the country.
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, supported by President Donald Trump, secured his position by winning against his Democratic opponent by nearly 12 percentage points in the recent election. Results from the Nassau County Board of Elections show that Republicans also triumphed in countywide races, seizing control in areas that were previously strongholds for Democrats. Meanwhile, New York City elected Zoran Mamdani, a socialist, as its new mayor on the same night.
Blakeman, who is considering a run for governor in 2026, attributed his and other Nassau Republicans’ reelections to a mixture of “strong leadership, American values, and common sense.” He mentioned that he focused on maintaining safe communities by hiring over 600 law enforcement personnel in just three years, all without raising taxes.
Expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve Nassau County again, Blakeman declared his intent to keep the area among the safest in America while maintaining his fiscal policies.
He highlighted his approaches on women’s sports, crime, and immigration, pointing out that Nassau County’s resistance to a “blue wave” was influenced by strong stances on these issues. He specifically noted the ban on transgender biological males from competing in women’s sports at county facilities, which Nassau was the first to enforce. He also emphasized a partnership with ICE to remove criminals from the community, praising his region’s recognition as the safest county in the nation.
Blakeman stated that he openly supported Trump throughout his campaign, which he believes resonated with voters, including many moderate Democrats and independent voters.
Democrat candidates had been the choice for Nassau County in the past eight elections, winning by narrow margins, including a significant victory for Joe Biden in 2020.
Just before the election, Trump endorsed Blakeman, proclaiming his steadfast support and noting Blakeman’s efforts alongside law enforcement to protect communities and reduce crime.
Blakeman mentioned the importance of focusing on economic development and job creation rather than simply government assistance. He argued that true improvement in living conditions stems from opportunities that facilitate hard work rather than dependence on aid.
Recent exit polls have indicated that voters in traditionally Democratic areas emphasize cost of living and economic issues as their primary concerns.
On the topic of the newly elected mayor Mamdani, Blakeman expressed serious concerns over his past comments against police, along with his progressive policies and proposed tax increases.
Despite his reservations, Blakeman committed to ensuring that Nassau County remains safe and prosperous while reflecting on the encouragement he received from various leaders to consider a gubernatorial run.
While the election received considerable media coverage, it was largely dominated by the Democratic Party, whose candidates also secured victories in Virginia and New Jersey’s gubernatorial races, alongside other notable positions in states such as Georgia.
Nassau County is home to about 1.4 million residents, showcasing a diverse demographic makeup and a significant Jewish community. It’s known for many residents commuting to New York City for work. Blakeman and other Republican incumbents, including the county district attorney and auditor, won by substantial margins, maintaining Republican control over the county council with only a minimal shift in seats.
