NFL Mourns Loss of Marshawn Kneeland
The NFL community is grieving the unfortunate loss of Marshawn Kneeland, a defensive end for the Dallas Cowboys. He was only 24 years old when he reportedly died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a police pursuit in Texas. This tragic news has resonated throughout the sports world, with many teams and players expressing their condolences.
“Such a tragic loss. My thoughts are with Marshawn’s family, friends, and teammates. He left us way too soon,” shared Russell Wilson, quarterback of the New York Giants, on social media.
Tennessee Titans star Jeffery Simmons also reacted, stating, “Watching this news about my brother in the NFL is heartbreaking! Just remember, even if someone appears happy, check in. We don’t always know what’s going on inside. It’s okay to ask for help.” He emphasized the importance of mental health support, encouraging those in need to reach out for help.
JJ Watt, a notable NFL player, added, “It’s hard to come to terms with the devastating news from Dallas. What a tragedy.”
Lance Taylor, who coaches the Western Michigan Broncos, where Kneeland played, expressed his sorrow: “I’m truly heartbroken. Marshawn was not just a talented player; he was a remarkable young man who had a significant impact on our program. His infectious energy, smile, and leadership will be greatly missed.”
In their statement, the NFL Players Association acknowledged the profound loss felt across the community: “Marshawn’s influence was immeasurable. Authorities report that a traffic stop initiated around 10:30 PM led to a pursuit, during which Kneeland reportedly fled on foot. Police later discovered his abandoned vehicle but could not locate him until around 1:30 AM. During the search, it was noted that he had been expressing suicidal thoughts. An official cause of death is pending determination by the local coroner’s office.
Kneeland was selected 56th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft and was in the midst of his second season with the Cowboys. His death arrived shortly after he scored his first NFL touchdown just a few days prior.
