Senator’s Confession Amidst Government Shutdown
Democratic Senator Peter Welch from Vermont recently revealed a surprising truth on the Senate floor to justify the ongoing Democratic-led government shutdown.
Currently, Congress is experiencing an unprecedented government shutdown, which started when Democrats pushed for an extension of Obamacare subsidies expiring at the year’s end. This extension, central to their stance against reopening the government, has faced scrutiny. Even Welch admitted that there are failures within the very system they aim to uphold.
“I owe you an explanation as to why I’m here today asking for a temporary extension,” Welch expressed. “We have failed to reduce health care costs,” he added, reflecting on the Affordable Care Act, which was enacted in 2010.
Alongside their commitment to support this healthcare initiative, Democrats are advocating for a $1.5 trillion spending bill that would reverse many of the legislative achievements from President Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act, should the government reopen.
Meanwhile, Senate Republicans are campaigning for a straightforward continuing resolution designed to fund the government at spending levels from the Biden administration—levels Democrats were in favor of previously. Despite this, only three Democrats have broken ranks to vote for the measure. With a 60-vote threshold, Republicans will need at least five additional Democratic votes, which now seems increasingly improbable.
The stalemate has prompted President Trump to urge Senate Majority Leader John Thune to consider scrapping the filibuster, which would enable Republicans to pass funding legislation with a simple majority. However, Mr. Thune is a longstanding defender of the filibuster tradition.
