Chilly Air from Canada Endangers 100 Million in Eastern U.S.

A significant cold front is on its way from southwestern Canada, poised to affect the eastern United States shortly.

Weather changes will start this weekend and extend into the following week, impacting both southern and northern areas, as reported by AccuWeather.

“Following the storm, colder air will push southward into the Plains and Mississippi Valley during the weekend. Chilly air from central Canada is expected to move down as the jet stream weakens, which should happen early next week,” the report indicated. In gusty areas, temperatures might feel 10 to 20 degrees colder than they really are.

The report highlights that over 100 million people will experience these temperature drops.

The coldest conditions will be seen in the northern Plains and upper Midwest, where temperatures will remain below freezing through the weekend. Low temperatures could dip into the teens or even single digits, according to the Weather Prediction Center.

On the whole, temperatures are forecasted to be 10 to 20 degrees below average, with freezing lows expected in the Southern Plains and Southeast on Sunday and Monday nights.

In Atlanta, highs are projected to be in the mid-40s on Monday, while in Chicago, temperatures will hover in the 30s on both Sunday and Monday. New York City is expected to see highs in the 40s come Tuesday, based on AccuWeather’s analysis.

“This drop in temperature will likely bring an end to the growing season in regions that haven’t yet experienced a hard freeze, spanning parts of the Plains, Midwest, Northeast, and Southeast,” the article noted.

People are advised to prepare—pack warm clothing, turn off outdoor faucets, drain hoses to prevent freezing, and complete yard work before the weather takes a turn.

“There’s a bit of good news for those adjusting to the cold: it shouldn’t stick around too long. Milder weather is expected to return to the central U.S. by Tuesday. However, another cold front from Canada may bring additional chill to the Northeast,” it was mentioned.

Millions across the nation are preparing for the impacts of a severe winter storm anticipated to unfold over a single weekend in March.
