Tragic Death of Marshawn Kneeland
Marshawn Kneeland, a player who participated in 18 games for the Dallas Cowboys since his rookie season in 2024, passed away on Thursday at the age of 24. The team shared the sad news in a statement, expressing their deep sorrow. “Marshawn was a cherished teammate and part of our organization. Our hearts go out to his girlfriend Catalina and his family,” they said.
Tributes flooded in on Thursday from various figures in the sports community. Following a dedication ceremony at his former high school, Dak Prescott shared his grief. “It hurt. My heart is heavy today,” Prescott remarked, reflecting on the emotional impact of losing Kneeland. “I ache for Marshawn, his family, his girlfriend, and for all my teammates. This pain is something I wouldn’t wish on anyone.”
Cowboys defensive lineman Solomon Thomas also shared a heartfelt message for his late teammate. “Brother Marshawn, we love you. I wish you could see that everything would be alright. I wish you knew the pain wouldn’t last and, how incredibly loved you are. We wanted you to stay,” he posted on Instagram. “Our hearts break for you and your loved ones. Each day, we will uplift your spirit.”
Thomas is also a co-founder of an organization called Defensive Line, which focuses on suicide prevention awareness. It’s been reported by Frisco police that Kneeland died from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities responded to the scene after receiving reports of a driver fleeing during a police pursuit, later discovering a crashed vehicle near the local parkway. They noted that Kneeland had fled on foot.
Earlier on that day, police were sent to Kneeland’s residence for a welfare check. A spokesperson for the police confirmed that a pursuit was already underway when they arrived at his apartment.
The investigation is still ongoing as the community continues to process this immeasurable loss.
The NFL expressed its condolences as well, stating, “We are deeply saddened by the tragic news of Marshawn Kneeland’s passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with his girlfriend Katarina, family, friends, and teammates. We’ve reached out to the Cowboys to offer support and counseling resources.”
Kneeland was drafted in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft and recorded the first sack of his professional career during the season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles. Interestingly, the Cowboys won’t play this weekend, as they have a bye.
