Deputy Fatality in Miami-Dade Shooting

On Friday, a Miami-Dade deputy lost his life during an incident that prompted a significant police response.

At a press briefing, Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero Stutz reported that Deputy Devin Jaramillo, age 27, was fatally shot while responding to a traffic accident. He was taken to a local hospital but unfortunately did not survive, with the sheriff describing the attack as “brutal.”

“Today is not okay,” Cordero Stutz stated. “What happened today with our deputy is unacceptable, and this day will always be remembered as tragic.” She urged the community to keep the family of the fallen deputy in their thoughts and prayers, stating, “We are a family, and we are suffering.”

The shooting took place shortly before 4 p.m., as the deputy attended to a motor vehicle crash in a warehouse area located near Southwest 128th Avenue and 122nd Avenue.

Bystanders alerted 911, and first responders quickly provided aid before he was transported to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, where he passed away.

“He was a son, a brother, a friend,” Cordero Stutz remarked.

Deputy Jaramillo had previously served with the Coral Gables Police Department. Cordero Stutz emphasized the sacrifice he made, saying, “He gave his life to protect us.” She expressed the need for society to reject violence against those who keep communities safe on a daily basis.

In a message on social media, Cordero Stutz expressed her condolences, stating, “My thoughts are with his family, friends, and all those affected during this tough time. Deputy Jaramillo’s legacy of integrity and courage will endure in the hearts of all who had the honor of serving alongside him.”

Additional support arrived from Coral Gables Police, the Florida Highway Patrol, and the FBI, with law enforcement converging on HCA Florida Kendall Hospital as well.

Police cordoned off the scene, closing several nearby roads to facilitate the investigation.

Miami-Dade Mayor Daniela Levin Cava shared a message of support on social media, saying, “We pray for the deputy shot in the line of duty today. Our community stands united with this courageous officer, his family, and all those in uniform who put their lives on the line to protect us.”
