Richard Kahn on Weight Management and Cooking
Richard Kahn, known from “Home Improvement,” shared some insights about maintaining a healthy weight, which he describes as a “conscious effort.” Last year, he lost 30 pounds and believes that trying to achieve a “perfect” weight can often lead to disappointment. He’s gradually learning to tune into what his body really needs.
“Eventually, you start recognizing what your body requires and what it doesn’t,” he mentioned. “You figure out what makes you reach for snacks when you’re not actually hungry.”
Kahn also noted that he avoids eating late, ideally not after 6 or 7 p.m. He believes waiting too long can lead to excessive hunger, making one more likely to overeat. After 40 years of marriage, he humorously reflected on how often he has to ask himself, “What do I want for dinner?”
When dining out, he enjoys steak but limits it due to its filling nature. At home, he prefers chicken and fish, especially since his wife, Tudi, doesn’t eat beef. He also loves making cowboy stew—a hearty mix of chicken, beans, and tomato sauce—finding it versatile enough for leftovers, which he can use for nachos later.
Kahn believes that a balance is essential, stating, “You need protein, and while you don’t necessarily need potatoes or rice, everything can fit into a balanced diet.” He and Tudi find it easier to stay on track with their diet when they both prioritize what they eat.
“I love pizza, but just two or three slices will do for me,” he noted. “There’s no need to have the entire pie. I’ve learned to have an off switch.”
He pointed out that while maintaining weight can be manageable for a few months, it’s easy to slip back into old habits. The couple addresses this by being mindful about food choices at home.
As an actor, Kahn mentioned that over the years, he’s faced temptations, especially during the holidays. Thanksgiving and Christmas bring their own challenges with seasonal foods, but he creatively uses leftovers in various dishes like turkey sandwiches enhanced with cranberry sauce.
Kahn, who played Al Borland from 1991 to 1999, recently reunited with his “Home Improvement” co-stars for a special occasion. He recalled how significant it was to reconnect, especially reminiscing about their time on the show. Reflecting on its continuous popularity, he suggested that its roots in family dynamics and real-life connections still resonate with viewers today.
Interestingly, Kahn’s journey isn’t only about food; he has also embraced fitness. He incorporates Pilates and weightlifting into his routine, stating, “I started building muscle and toning up.” He laughed about the soreness that sometimes comes after starting a new workout regime—predicting that the real test comes in the days following the first workout.
As he prepares for the holidays and looks back on his long career, Kahn fondly remembers moments from his personal life, including how he proposed to Tudi at Zabar’s, a grocery store in New York City. The proposal was spontaneous, timed close to her birthday, which adds a unique layer to their history together.
