Gotham FC Faces Tough Playoff Challenge Again
Two years back, Gotham FC entered the playoffs as the lowest seed and made a remarkable run to secure the franchise’s first NWSL title.
As we approach this weekend, Gotham finds itself in a somewhat similar situation.
With a record of 9 wins, 9 losses, and 8 draws, they finished the season with 36 points, landing them the eighth and final playoff spot. However, the journey to the championship looks especially daunting as they head to Kansas City to take on the top-ranked Current in the quarterfinals this Sunday.
Kansas City has had an impressive season, arguably being the best team in the league’s history.
The Current notched up 21 wins in 26 games and finished with a staggering 21-point lead over the second-place Washington Spirit. Their goal differential of plus-36 is noteworthy, having scored more goals than any other team while conceding significantly fewer.
But Gotham is ready to confront the challenges ahead.
“I think it’s a fantastic opportunity for us going to KC to pull off a major upset,” Gotham midfielder Jaelyn Howell expressed. “We all have confidence in one another and are really looking forward to it.”
Howell suggested that Gotham’s position in eighth place doesn’t accurately represent their capabilities, and, well, she might be onto something.
Earlier in the NWSL season, Gotham had slipped to tenth place by early August, but then something shifted. They discovered a winning formula, finishing with 7 wins, 4 losses, and no draws in the following months, which propelled them up to third place.
Unfortunately, they did hit a rough patch last month, losing two out of their last three games, including the season finale against North Carolina Courage.
Still, belief plays a crucial role, especially during high-stakes situations, and Gotham seems to have that in abundance.
“When all the pieces come together, we’re the strongest team,” Howell asserted. “We just need to have that belief and approach the playoff scenarios with that mindset.”
Despite losing both previous encounters against Kansas City, the outcomes don’t tell the whole story. Gotham had better possession and shot attempts in those matches.
“The goals they scored showed us some essential details we need to focus on,” noted Gotham midfielder Josefin Hasbo. “But I believe we can head into this game confidently, knowing we’re capable of keeping the ball moving and staying organized.”
So, what will it take to pull off the ultimate upset?
“We can’t afford any mistakes, as this team can capitalize on any opportunity,” Hasbo emphasized. “It’s important for Gotham to display what it aspires to be—a club that not only has the capability on the ball but also the tactical awareness to exploit space effectively.”
Howell added, “Everyone must synchronize, believe in each other. It’s a challenging environment, but our team has the experience from World Cups and top leagues. So we need to lean on that experience, trust one another, and stick to our game plan. I really think we have a good chance.”
