Deadly Crash in Florida Bar Involving Fleeing Driver

A 22-year-old driver who was trying to escape from the police crashed into a crowded patio bar in Florida early Saturday morning. This tragic incident has left four people dead and injured at least 13 others. The Tampa police chief described the event as a “senseless” tragedy.

The driver, identified as Silas Kenneth Sampson, faces four counts of vehicular homicide and four counts of aggravated flight to avoid serious injury or death, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) records. He is currently being held without bail at Valkenburg Road Jail.

Chief Lee Bercow of the Tampa Police Department reported that just after 12:30 a.m., officers observed reckless driving and road racing on Interstate 275. Sampson continued speeding and driving dangerously, exiting the interstate and heading toward downtown Ybor City.

About 15 minutes later, the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) spotted him and initiated a pursuit, although an attempted PIT maneuver was not successful. The FHP withdrew from the chase as Sampson sped toward 7th Avenue, where he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a local gay bar, Bradley’s on 7th.

Sampson is accused of hitting over a dozen adults on the outdoor patio, which resulted in three victims dying at the scene. A fourth person succumbed to their injuries in the hospital. Currently, two victims remain in critical condition, while seven others are stable; two have been treated and released, and two were treated on-site.

Authorities have stated that, as of Saturday, there was no evidence suggesting that the victims or the businesses were targeted by Sampson.

HCSO provided footage of Sampson being taken to Orient Road Jail after the crash. “As we collaborate with the FHP to bring justice to the victims and their families, we urge everyone to keep the victims and those mourning their loss in your thoughts,” the city expressed in a news release.

Witness Howard Hopkins recounted seeing a car leap the curb, hitting a building corner before speeding through a group of people on the patio. “Tables went everywhere, chairs went everywhere, bodies went everywhere. It was pretty bad,” he stated.

Bradley’s owner, Bradley Nelson, referred to the incident as “horrifying” in a Facebook statement. He mentioned how traumatic the event was for both staff and patrons. “Our community is close-knit, and our customers have become like family. Please keep the victims and the injured in your prayers,” he added. Nelson also extended his gratitude to first responders for their swift actions during the emergency.

Tampa Mayor Jane Castor also expressed her condolences on social media, acknowledging the heavy toll this tragedy has taken on the city. “What happened in Ybor City last night was devastating. Our entire community feels this loss. The investigation is ongoing, and we’re committed to ensuring the safety of our residents,” she wrote.

The Florida Highway Patrol is currently leading the investigation into the tragic incident.
