Billy Bob Thornton Critiques Celebrity Political Speeches at Award Shows

Billy Bob Thornton recently voiced his thoughts on celebrities who inject politics into awards ceremonies. In a conversation on The Joe Rogan Experience, the 70-year-old actor expressed a general disinterest in awards. He mentioned he has accumulated many accolades, mostly from earlier days when awards had a certain authenticity.

“I’ve won a few lately,” he noted, adding a bit of sarcasm about the traditional award show experience, mentioning he would rather eat dry chicken and green beans than listen to acceptance speeches he finds self-important.

Thornton believes that those genuinely honored to receive an award should use their moment to acknowledge the people who helped them reach that point. “There’s a time and a place for that,” he asserted, suggesting award shows should remain focused on celebrating achievements rather than pushing political agendas.

“Please don’t talk about saving badgers in Wisconsin or something,” he said. He acknowledged that many celebrities feel compelled to use their platforms for advocacy, but he questioned whether award ceremonies are the right time for that.

Thornton added a hypothetical, saying if someone has immense wealth and wants to help badgers, they should just do it. “You have the funds, so why not?” he remarked, suggesting it doesn’t really stretch their budget to act on their interests.

Joe Rogan chimed in, pointing out that some celebrities use these moments to showcase their compassion, further emphasizing Thornton’s criticism.

Thornton’s rise to fame began with “Sling Blade” in 1996, a film he wrote, directed, and starred in, which garnered him an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Reflecting on his career, he expressed gratitude for achieving success later in life. He mused about how, had he received an Academy Award nomination at a younger age, his life might have taken a different path.

“If that had happened when I was 18 or 21, who knows what I would have done?” he wondered. Thornton feels that his background in the music industry prepared him for the ups and downs of the film industry, helping him navigate fame more effectively.

Currently, he stars alongside Demi Moore in the popular series “Landman” on Paramount+, where he plays an oil executive faced with the challenge of leading his company to the top.
