Tragic Hit-and-Run Claims Life of College Student

A popular college student was tragically killed in a hit-and-run incident while jogging in Kansas, and her body remained undiscovered for nearly ten hours, according to authorities.

Elsa McGrane, a 20-year-old pre-med student at the University of Kansas, was running near Lawrence Regional Airport when she was struck by a truck on Thursday at approximately 6 p.m., as reported by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

It wasn’t until around 3:35 a.m. on Friday that a passerby found McGrane’s body and alerted the police. The officers indicated that she had passed away while running in that area.

Investigation of the scene revealed that McGrane was hit by a white pickup truck, which fled the incident.

McGrane, originally from Omaha, Nebraska, was set to graduate in 2026. Her university community has been deeply affected by her loss.

“Our hearts go out to Elsa’s family and friends in this incredibly tragic situation,” the police stated.

Some sources indicate that she was actively involved in her sorority, Chi Omega, where she served as house manager and was a member of the board of directors. The sorority expressed their sorrow on social media, stating, “We are heartbroken by the loss of our beloved sister Elsa McClain.”

In a heartfelt message, they described her as the kind of person everyone aspires to be: “honest, kind, and full of light,” noting how she made those around her feel valued.

As the investigation continues, authorities urge anyone who may have information about the vehicle or who was in the vicinity of East 1500 Road between 5:45 and 6:30 p.m. on Thursday to come forward to assist detectives.

“Our investigators and detectives are working tirelessly to thoroughly investigate this case, identify the driver responsible, and ensure appropriate actions are taken through the justice system,” they added.
