Former NH Representative Pleads Guilty to Child Abuse Charges

Stacey-Marie Lawton, a former state representative in New Hampshire, is reported to be the first openly transgender elected official in the U.S. history and recently admitted guilt in federal court regarding charges of child sexual abuse.

At 41, Lawton entered her plea at a federal court in Boston, as stated by WMUR. The charges included the sexual exploitation of a child, notably involving child sexual abuse.

Lawton, who authorities refer to using feminine pronouns, is alleged to have worked with her ex-girlfriend, Lindsey Groves, to exploit children at a daycare center named Creative Minds located in Chingsboro, Massachusetts.

Groves, a former daycare employee, reportedly captured nude images of children and sent them to Lawton back in 2022, which was during Lawton’s tenure as a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives.

According to court documents from that year, Groves is said to have taken four photographs of children younger than five years old.

Prior to and following the image exchanges, Lawton and Groves allegedly sent thousands of text messages where Lawton seemed to express a disturbing interest in sexual activities involving children.

Remembering Lawton’s political journey, it’s clear it was filled with complexities and challenges. When she was elected to the state Legislature in 2012, it was touted as a historic moment, being the first openly transgender individual in New Hampshire to achieve such a status.

However, her political career was marred by difficulties. After her election, Lawton announced a resignation linked to a prior felony conviction involving credit card fraud.

And while she attempted to run for office again in 2014, her hopes were dashed when the New Hampshire Voting Law Commission denied her request due to an existing suspended sentence. Not one to back down completely, Lawton successfully ran for a seat in the New Hampshire House of Representatives in 2020, representing District 31.

Exhibiting further controversy, Lawton resigned from her position in 2022 following an arrest related to a stalking incident.

Lawton’s story underscores the challenges and complications that can arise in both personal and professional realms, leaving a complex legacy in New Hampshire politics.
