Darron Payne Faces Suspension After Punching Opponent
Darron Payne, the defensive tackle for the Commanders, has received a one-game suspension without pay from the NFL. This follows an incident where he threw a punch at Lions receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown during a recent loss that saw the Commanders defeated 44-22.
At 28, Payne, who was a first-round draft pick, is reported to be subject to return as of November 17, according to NFL.com. There’s also a possibility he might appeal the suspension.
He was ejected in the first half of the game after delivering a punch to St. Brown’s hip. It seems Payne’s frustration escalated as the Lions built a significant 19-point lead with just under ten minutes remaining in the second quarter. It’s always tough being on the losing side, and perhaps that contributed to his reaction.
This was the first time in Payne’s career that he was thrown out of a game for unsportsmanlike conduct. Interestingly, fellow defensive lineman Javon Kinlaw, previously with the Jets, also received a penalty for a similar infraction but remained in the game.
The unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against Payne allowed the Lions an easy two-point conversion, further widening their lead. Given Payne’s substantial base salary of $19.56 million, if he ends up missing the game, he could see a loss of about $1.15 million in earnings for that week. That’s quite a heavy hit, isn’t it?
The Commanders, meanwhile, are struggling this season, now sitting at 3-7, and they played without their injured starting quarterback Jayden Daniels in the latest match. It’s, well, a challenging time for the team.
