Representative Bonnie Watson Coleman Will Not Seek Re-Election

The 119th Congress sees another member stepping back, as Representative Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-N.J.) announces she will not pursue re-election for the U.S. House of Representatives next year.

In her statement, she expressed, “I promised many years ago that I would always be at the forefront on behalf of the people I represent, and I believe I have fulfilled that promise to the best of my ability. I have always been on the front lines of the fight for principled, progressive policies.”

Coleman emphasized her commitment to serve her constituents in New Jersey until the final day of her term, stating, “Although I am not seeking re-election, I still have work to do in my final year in office.”

Representing New Jersey since 2015, Coleman previously held a position in the Garden State House of Representatives from 1998 before joining Congress. In her last election in 2024, she won decisively against Republican Darius Mayfyd, receiving about 61.2% of the vote.

Despite the absence of incumbency, it seems unlikely that Republicans will take over New Jersey’s 12th Congressional District.

Coleman, now 80, is the latest in a wave of Democratic lawmakers announcing their retirements, following former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who recently stated she would also not seek re-election in 2026.

Among other prominent Democrats stepping down include Senators Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), both of whom are in their late 70s and early 80s.

This has sparked ongoing discussions around age and longevity in public service, raising questions across both parties. For instance, Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), another significant politician, has also expressed his intentions not to run again.

Coleman believes it’s essential to pave the way for future leadership, stating, “I believe now is the time to pass the torch to the next leader who will take on this responsibility.”
