John Cena’s Unexpected Championship Victory
It’s tough to imagine more success for John Cena in the realm of WWE. He has, after all, achieved the remarkable feat of being a 17-time WWE Champion, a record he set when he overcame Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 41 to claim the Undisputed WWE Championship. However, following his title loss at SummerSlam, many believed Cena’s chances of holding another belt were slim.
Then came Monday’s RAW. It was an electrifying moment when Dominik Mysterio found himself face-to-face with Cena in Boston, close to Cena’s hometown of West Newbury, Massachusetts. WWE Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque decided to throw them into an unexpected match for the Intercontinental Championship.
Mysterio, son of the iconic Rey Mysterio, held his ground for much of the match, putting up a commendable fight. Yet, his slick maneuvers didn’t entirely fool the WWE officials. He attempted to secure victory with a 619 and a frog splash, but Cena was quick to counter.
In a surprising turn, Cena lifted Mysterio and executed his famous Attitude Adjustment, ultimately claiming victory and becoming the new Intercontinental Champion. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Boston crowd, saying, “Thank you so much, Boston. We have a champion here tonight because of you,” before the arena erupted with fireworks.
Backstage, Cena received warm congratulations from fellow WWE Superstars, recognizing his extensive journey in the ring. While his title reigns as both WWE Champion and World Heavyweight Champion are often highlighted, he’s also amassed impressive accolades as a five-time United States Champion and a four-time Tag Team Champion alongside wrestlers like The Miz, David Otunga, Batista, and Shawn Michaels.
With his latest win, Cena has now joined the ranks of WWE’s Grand Slam Champions, a title that encompasses the WWE, Intercontinental, United States, and World Tag Team Championships. The last to earn this distinction were Kevin Owens and Finn Balor back in 2013.
As for who might challenge Cena next, that remains a bit of a mystery. A tournament dubbed the “Last Time Is Now” kicked off late Monday night to determine Cena’s next opponent, adding an intriguing twist to his championship reign.
