Ladd McConkey on how his faith drives his success in the NFL

Ladd McConkie’s Faith and Football Journey with the Chargers

“Faith, Family, Football”—that’s a phrase many shout from the sidelines, but for Ladd McConkie, a wide receiver for the Los Angeles Chargers, it truly encapsulates his life.

Originally from Georgia, McConkie is now in his second NFL season. He’s quite open about how important his Christian beliefs are to him, both while playing and in his personal life with his wife, Sydney. It’s interesting, really. His head coach, Jim Harbaugh, seems to share the same vision. In fact, many members of the Chargers’ team express their beliefs daily, and McConkie feels fortunate to be part of such a supportive organization.

“Coach Harbaugh really encourages that within our program,” McConkie said, referencing a weekly chapel session led by punter JK Scott. “The coaches and players come together, and it’s all about worshiping and enjoying that time.” It’s a practice he treasures, bringing everyone closer.

When watching McConkie play, it’s noticeable how relaxed he seems when he’s on the field. He attributes part of that freedom to a combination of hard work and faith, suggesting that his spirituality aids in his performance.

“Experiencing God’s love eliminates so many fears,” he commented. “I don’t dwell on what could go wrong. When you feel fulfilled by that kind of love, it really lets you play without worry.” It’s a refreshing way to approach the pressures of professional sports.

Harbaugh, in previous conversations, has emphasized how faith, family, and football clarify his thoughts. He finds encouragement in players from other teams speaking about their beliefs during the season, mentioning athletes like CJ Stroud and Patrick Mahomes. McConkie resonates with this sentiment.

“Seeing other players share their experiences makes a difference,” he expressed. “We all have tough times, but faith helps us get through.” He appreciates having a coach who supports this openness among the players.

While McConkie is committed to his role with the Chargers, he stays connected to his collegiate roots and is eyeing the upcoming game between the Georgia Bulldogs and Texas Longhorns. Even though he can’t attend that particular game, he plans to go before the Chargers face the Jacksonville Jaguars.

He mentioned how Dr. Pepper is enhancing the college football experience with their “Pepper Portal” initiative. McConkie described the event as “disgusting” in a complimentary way, showcasing how it unites college football fans. “Georgia fans are ready for whatever, and we’re excited to welcome Texas into the SEC fold,” he noted.
