Democratic Senators Surrender Amid Ongoing Government Shutdown

As the prolonged government shutdown continued, Democratic senators ultimately caved to Republican pressure. They contend that, despite the lack of tangible achievements, the shutdown was justified.

The Democrats initiated the shutdown to compel Republicans to extend the Affordable Care Act health benefits set to expire soon. However, after over 40 days, eight Democrats changed their stance, joining Republicans to end the shutdown without any agreement on healthcare.

The only concession made by Republicans was to retract the troop reduction notifications issued during the shutdown and a promise to hold off on further implementation until January 30, when the continuing resolution is set to expire.

Many within the party voiced their frustration and disappointment as eight Democrats opted to support the continuing resolution. Yet, a few Senate Democrats maintained that the record-length shutdown was still worthwhile.

Colorado Democratic Senator John Hickenlooper expressed to CNN that the extensive reliance of millions on federal assistance justified the shutdown. “I think so,” he stated, acknowledging the difficulty but emphasizing its importance. “This has drawn attention to a situation that is indeed traumatic and, at times, life-threatening for many across the country.”

In a similar vein, Rhode Island Senator Jack Reed also echoed Hickenlooper’s sentiments, claiming the shutdown was necessary. After some contemplation, Reid said, “I guess so. We realize that this is not merely a medical issue; it reflects a broader context.” He asserted that President Trump had tried to manipulate food assistance programs like SNAP as a means of pressuring Democrats.

However, Reid’s characterization of Trump’s actions is somewhat misleading; Congress holds the responsibility for managing SNAP, and Democrats deliberately prolonged the government shutdown. Notably, neither Hickenlooper nor Reid were among the eight Democrats who voted to reopen the government.
