Trump Backs Abbott’s Re-election Bid in Texas
President Donald Trump expressed his full support for Texas Governor Greg Abbott on Tuesday. Abbott, a Republican, officially launched his re-election campaign this past Sunday with an event in Houston.
In a post shared on Truth Social, Trump called Abbott “an extraordinary governor and person,” promising that “He will never let you down!” He went on to praise Abbott’s three consecutive election wins, emphasizing a monumental victory where he secured 6.4 million votes in 2024, the highest ever recorded.
In response to Trump’s call for additional support, Abbott addressed the situation by saying, “We are ready at any time” as he mobilized “elite Texas National Guard” units.
Trump also credited Abbott for successfully passing a redistricting bill, suggesting it could provide Republications with five additional seats during the 2026 midterms. “Thanks to Greg’s bold and effective leadership,” Trump noted, “the great people of Texas will have the chance to elect five new MAGA Republicans.” He characterized this development as a significant victory for both Texas and the broader Republican agenda.
The former president highlighted various priorities championed by Abbott, such as advancing Texas values, economic growth, tax cuts, and efforts to secure the state’s borders. “When you enter our country, we will ensure law and order,” Trump stated, reiterating support for military and law enforcement and a firm commitment to the Second Amendment.
In a follow-up, Abbott described Trump’s endorsement as “an honor,” emphasizing their mutual dedication to border security and public safety. He expressed a desire to continue their collaborative efforts for a more prosperous Texas and America.
Abbott is vying for a fourth term and used his campaign launch to unveil a substantial property tax reform plan, addressing rising concerns about local tax increases. “It’s time to drive a stake permanently into the heart of local property tax increases,” he said. He remains optimistic despite earlier predictions that Texas could shift politically, pointing out his sizable victory margin over former Rep. Beto O’Rourke in 2022.
Additionally, Abbott explained in an earlier interview that the alignment between him and Trump is rooted in their shared beliefs. “We both believe in the rule of law,” he said, underlining the collaborative nature of their relationship aimed at keeping the nation safe.
While specifics regarding future cooperation with the Trump administration were not disclosed, Abbott assured that Texas remains prepared to support whatever is necessary. “What I can predict is how Texas will respond,” he concluded, expressing a commitment to assist whenever the country is in need.
