Concerns Over Government Shutdown and Air Travel

During a segment on CNN’s “The Lead,” Rep. Glenn Ivey from Maryland expressed his unease about air travel amidst the impending end of the government shutdown. He mentioned receiving calls from constituents relieved about the shutdown concluding just in time for Thanksgiving travel. However, he noted that there’s a larger issue at play.

Ivey firmly opposed the proposed bill, stating, “I definitely say no to this bill. It’s essentially the same proposal we passed in March, and it doesn’t improve anything. On the contrary, it has worsened conditions, particularly with massive cuts to Medicaid totaling $1 trillion that we’ve passed meanwhile, which were dreadful for the American public.”

Host Jake Tapper followed up by highlighting that Ivey represents around 50,000 federal employees in his Maryland district and inquired about the impact of the shutdown on SNAP benefits. He asked if any of Ivey’s constituents were pleased about the impending end of the shutdown.

In response, Ivey noted, “If they were satisfied, they wouldn’t reach out to me. Many of the individuals I’ve encountered during this period were often queuing at food pantries for assistance. They were telling others to get things in order. Many others, outside my district perhaps, are indeed worried about air travel, and while I certainly wish them well in reaching their destinations, I still believe bigger issues are at stake. The failure to extend the medical tax credit could mean millions of Americans losing their health insurance. It’s tragic that this is how governance is being approached—endlessly fighting in courts over significant funds just to help feed people. We need to challenge this approach.”
