Former Teacher Sentenced for Abuse
A former teacher from Virginia has been sentenced to a staggering 132 years and 102 months in prison after being convicted of horrific abuse against her two stepsons, who were just 9 and 11 when the abuse began.
Barbara Paul, found guilty in July on 42 charges, faced allegations linked to her fiancé, a police officer in Henrico. Before these events, she had been teaching in the Henrico County school system.
According to the prosecution, the abuse included severe physical punishments and demanding excessive exercise from the boys, like jumping for extended periods. Disturbingly, police obtained video evidence showing Paul strangling the children in their home.
The boys faced punishment for minor infractions, such as failing to guess numbers in Paul’s head, putting pencils in their lunchboxes, or even missing the bus. It’s hard to wrap your head around how such trivial things could warrant such severe consequences.
Witnesses, including school officials, spoke up about noticing injuries on the older boy during school, and although they reported the situation to Child Protective Services, it seems there was no follow-up action taken.
During the trial, Paul’s attorney presented a defense centered on her mental health issues, suggesting she suffered from executive dysfunction and ADHD. There was also an assertion that the boys’ father had been abusive toward her.
Angela Fountain, the boys’ grandmother, expressed relief outside the courthouse, stating, “My grandchildren will never have to see this woman again.” She elaborated on how the family felt a sense of freedom now that Paul will not be part of their lives anymore, reflecting a deeply felt elation and hope for the future.
Judge David E. Johnson, delivering the sentence, remarked on the “evil heart” that drove Paul’s actions, distinguishing between a deranged mind and sheer malice. He emphasized the importance of ensuring the children would never have to encounter their former stepmother again.
