Washington Prosecutor Critiques Mayor’s Relationship with Trump
In a recent interview on “Pod Force One,” Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. Attorney for Washington, D.C., expressed her take on her cooperative relationship with Mayor Muriel Bowser while also criticizing her for being overly influenced by progressive politics.
Pirro, who became the city’s top prosecutor not long ago, noted, “I decided to meet Bowser early on and make him a friend.” She described Bowser as “a very nice person,” suggesting that if politics weren’t a factor, their connection could be even stronger.
According to Pirro, the mayor recognizes that the future of D.C. is tied to its security and prosperity, making collaboration feasible. Their relationship, however, stands in contrast to Bowser’s challenging interactions with President Trump during his first term, particularly surrounding the protests following George Floyd’s death.
Now, it seems Bowser is seeking a more constructive dialogue with Trump, trying not to provoke him while also aiming to find common ground. This approach contrasts sharply with the more confrontational style favored by some grassroots Democrats. Bowser’s strategy faced scrutiny earlier this summer when Trump took steps to federalize the D.C. police and deployed the National Guard.
When asked about Bowser’s coordination during Trump’s involvement in the District, Pirro demurred, stating, “I can’t take credit for that.”
Pirro has noticed how Bowser handles various policies, particularly regarding immigration laws that restrict local cooperation with federal authorities. She remarked that Bowser tends to “let herself roll,” indicating some frustration with certain liberal measures implemented under her watch. “These are decisions she has to make,” she acknowledged, mentioning that both she and Bowser are politicians navigating their own paths.
Additionally, Bowser has consistently advocated for D.C. statehood and sought to minimize federal control over local governance. However, the Home Rule Act gives Congress the authority to override local laws, which has happened before when lawmakers rejected a bill Bowser supported.
Some Republican representatives have proposed measures that could eliminate D.C.’s local autonomy, potentially placing the capital under greater federal oversight.
Pirro also expressed support for President Trump’s initiatives aimed at enhancing the safety and appeal of Washington, D.C. “What the president is doing is working to make Washington, D.C., safe and beautiful,” she said, emphasizing her role as part of a larger effort.
