The Giants Search for a New Coach Begins
The hunt for a new Giants head coach is officially on.
Following the departure of coach Brian Daboll after another disappointing 2-8 season, predictions about his successor are already circulating. Evan Roberts and Tiki Barber discussed potential candidates on WFAN, hinting that a Super Bowl champion might be in the mix.
“Ideally, I’d want a young, innovative offensive mind, but I think they really need someone with experience,” Barber noted. “Mike McCarthy seems like a logical choice.” Other names brought up included Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, Washington’s offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, and former Giants player Antonio Pierce.
Since Daboll’s exit, McCarthy’s name has gained traction. Daboll ended his 3.5-year stint with the Giants after yet another loss marked by a fourth-quarter collapse.
During his tenure, Daboll held a 20-40-1 record, achieving postseason success in his first year in 2022. Co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch acknowledged the team’s struggles in a statement, expressing a commitment to significantly enhance the franchise going forward.
In the interim, offensive coordinator Mike Kafka has stepped up as the acting head coach, while general manager Joe Schoen will oversee the search for a permanent coach.
McCarthy, at 62, has a long coaching history, having led the Packers to a Super Bowl win in 2011. He was let go after the 2018 season but returned to coaching with the Cowboys, where he served for five years, amassing a 49-35 regular-season record and four playoff appearances before parting ways in January.
Beyond McCarthy, speculation also surrounds Bill Belichick, considering his history with the franchise as a Super Bowl-winning defensive coordinator in the 1980s.
When asked about the Giants during a press conference, the current UNC football coach emphasized his focus on the upcoming game against Wake Forest.
Daboll’s successor will mark the fifth head coach the Giants have had in just nine years.
