Giants Interim Coach Mike Kafka Makes Key Decisions
Mike Kafka exuded confidence on Wednesday as he stepped into his new role as the interim head coach for the Giants. He announced his decision to elevate Jameis Winston to starting quarterback while rookie Jackson Dart is undergoing treatment for a concussion.
In addition, Kafka named tight ends coach Tim Kelly as the offensive coordinator, and he will retain the play-calling responsibilities for the upcoming game against the Packers at MetLife Stadium.
This shift in leadership came the day after the Giants’ owners, John Mara and Steve Tisch, decided to let go of former head coach Brian Daboll, following a disappointing loss to the Bears, which marked the team’s fourth straight defeat and left them with a 2-8 record after a third consecutive 10-game season.
“I’m excited to lead this group,” Kafka remarked. “Our focus will be on coming together and making sure our players and coaches are organized and ready for the challenges ahead.”
During his first media session, Kafka maintained a calm demeanor, though a few beads of sweat on his forehead hinted at the unusualness of the situation for him, especially on a chilly day at the Giants’ training facility.
Despite the circumstances, Kafka responded firmly to inquiries about his future in this role. The remainder of the season includes seven games that could serve as an audition for him. Given his reputation within the organization, he could be in line for a permanent position if he impresses owner and GM Joe Schoen.
“Right now, my sole focus is on the players,” he said. “We need to unite as a staff to develop a solid game plan.”
When the topic shifted to Daboll’s firing, Kafka admitted, “I had no expectations at all.” He expressed gratitude for the guidance he received from Daboll, recognizing his contributions to his professional development.
Kafka indicated that he informed Winston, who served as the No. 3 quarterback until now, that he would be starting this week, with Russell Wilson stepping in as backup. Wilson had initially started the first three games before being demoted to No. 2 behind Dart.
“Russ is a true professional,” Kafka noted, appreciating Wilson’s attitude about the change. “I’m confident in both Jameis and Russ; they’ll be ready while Jackson continues in concussion protocols.”
Dart had to exit the game against the Bears after taking a hit that resulted in a concussion, and Kafka seemed to doubt Dart’s availability for the next contest.
“Jackson is still in the protocols,” he explained. “I have a lot of trust in our medical staff; they’re doing a thorough job with his treatment. Expect updates daily; he’s progressing well within the guidelines.”
