Australian actress Ruby Rose has criticized Hollywood star Sidney Sweeney, labeling him a “cretin” following the release of a recent film. The movie, featuring Sweeney, performed poorly at the box office.
Rose expressed her frustration, saying, “The original script for Christy Martin was incredible. It changed everything for me. I was really eager to play the role of Cherry. Everyone had been through the main story. Many of us were actually gay. Maybe that’s why I stayed in acting—losing roles is just part of the game.” She conveyed this in a Monday post online.
From her role in Orange is the New Black, Rose continued her critique of Sweeney, who gained fame from Euphoria. Sweeney previously stated, “We don’t always make art for the numbers; we create for the impact.” Rose countered that no audience wants to see individuals who disdain them pretending to be something they’re not.
“You’re a cretin, and you’ve ruined the movie. I just don’t understand,” Rose told Sweeney, asserting that “Christy deserves to be recognized more.”
Sweeney, who starred in the biopic about boxer Christy Martin, remarked on Instagram that she was “deeply proud” of the film and the narrative it presented, sharing behind-the-scenes photos.
Sweeney added in her post, “I’m honored to represent someone as strong and resilient as Christy Martin.” She described the experience as one of the greatest honors of her life, saying the film encompasses survival, courage, and hope.
“Through our campaign, we’ve aimed to raise awareness about domestic violence survivors. We all believed that Christy’s story could save lives,” she continued. “Thanks to everyone who saw it, felt it, and believed in it.” Sweeney concluded that if the film can inspire even one woman to seek safety, then it’s achieved its purpose.
Sweeney ended her reflections by calling Christy the most impactful project of her career.
Regarding boxer Christy Martin, she praised Sweeney during a Q&A session at the Toronto Film Festival in September, commending her transformation for the role. Martin noted, “She wasn’t the beautiful, glamorous Sidney. She became a tough, strong Christy in this movie. I thought it was fantastic. She was outstanding.”
Sweeney has faced criticism from various groups for a commercial she made for American Eagle jeans, as well as backlash for not voicing discontent in a recent interview with GQ.
