Vietnam Veteran Shoots Intruder in Los Angeles

A 79-year-old Vietnam veteran has garnered attention for fatally shooting an intruder who reportedly broke into a female tenant’s home in Los Angeles last week.

George Karkok is currently in the hospital recovering from serious injuries, including broken legs and a broken hip, after he confronted the intruder outside his Studio City residence around 7 a.m. on Friday. He had heard a woman screaming for help, according to reports from the Los Angeles Police Department and various media outlets.

“If I didn’t take care of him, I had no idea what he was going to do or what he could do,” Karkok commented from his hospital bed at Holy Cross Hospital in Mission Hills.

Surveillance footage captured the naked suspect wandering the neighborhood, screaming and vandalizing a lawn sign before allegedly trespassing.

Karkok attempted to persuade the intruder to leave, informing him that he was armed and calling the police. However, the situation took a turn when the naked man tackled him.

“All we kept saying was, ‘Go away, go away,'” Karkok recalled.

“He jumped on top of me and pushed me down. I couldn’t bear the weight. He had his legs wrapped around me, and I couldn’t move. The weight made me fall on top of him.”

During the struggle, police reported that Karkok managed to grab his gun and shot the intruder in the chest before firing another shot into the man’s head. The alleged perpetrator was declared dead at the scene.

Karkok stated, “I wasn’t thinking about myself. I was looking to solve a problem. I hadn’t used my gun in 28 years. I never thought I’d need to, but that’s why I had it—because you never know.”

Following the incident, the brave homeowner underwent emergency surgery, and his family indicated that his recovery would be long and challenging.

Residents have praised Karkok as a hero, and local police paid him a visit in the hospital on Veterans Day. Despite the accolades, Karkok remains modest, insisting he simply acted as he felt was right.

“I ignore it, but I don’t consider myself a hero,” he told one news outlet. “I was fortunate enough to do the right thing. I’m just grateful that I’m alive and that the situation was resolved.”
