Overview, forecast, key points to follow in Week 11

A glimpse into the NFL Week 11 matchup featuring the Jets against the Patriots in Foxboro, Massachusetts:

Marquee Matchup

Jets RB Breece Hall vs. Patriots Front Seven

Hall is really in form, recently recording 83 rushing yards and 42 receiving yards against the Browns, just a week after his 133 rushing yards and two touchdowns against the Bengals. Not trading him now seems like a solid decision.

“He’s capable of being a three-down back and can adapt to any running scheme,” Glenn stated. “Some backs excel in wide zones or gap schemes, but he’s versatile. Plus, you can put him in as a receiver to catch balls out of the backfield. He can create explosive plays whenever he gets the ball.”

The Patriots will provide a significant challenge for Hall and the Jets’ running game with their impressive league-leading defense, allowing only 79.2 rushing yards per game. They recently signed defensive tackle Milton Williams to a hefty contract, pairing him with Christian Barmore and Hyris Tonga to stifle opposing runners.

Indeed, Tampa Bay’s Sean Tucker was the first player to rush for over 50 yards against the Patriots this season.

4 Down

Days of May: The most surprising aspect of the Patriots’ success this season is how rapidly quarterback Drake Maye has improved.

After a rocky rookie season, he’s thrust himself into MVP conversations this year under the guidance of Mike Vrabel and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. He’s completing 71.7% of his passes, tallying 19 touchdowns against five interceptions.

The Jets will face him without cornerback Azaleai Thomas, who had just stepped into the starting role following the Sauce Gardner trade but now has a concussion.

“We all know he’s a top-tier athlete, and it’s impressive to see his growth at such a young age,” Glenn remarked. “His recognition of the game is quite exceptional, especially given the MVP talks around him.”

No Passing Zone: The Jets’ passing attack has struggled for much of the season, so the Patriots will likely focus on stopping the run. Ultimately, the Jets’ll need to challenge teams deep downfield. Coach Aaron Glenn hinted he wouldn’t disclose quarterback decisions immediately, although Justin Fields is anticipated to start. If Fields falters early, it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility for Tyrod Taylor to come in during the second half.

Both quarterbacks will be missing star receiver Garrett Wilson due to a knee injury.

It’ll be curious to see if the Jets can snag Adonai Mitchell and John Metchie post-deadline.

Something Special: Despite their fluctuating performance on offense and defense this season, the Jets have consistently excelled in special teams. They made a mark in last week’s game against the Browns with two touchdown returns: a 99-yard kickoff return by Kane Nwanwu and a 74-yard punt return by Isiah Williams. Nick Folk has been flawless with kicks this season, and Austin McNamara is averaging 44.1 net yards per punt, ranking him seventh in the league.

Training Time: Patriots rookie Treveillon Henderson had an impressive game against Tampa Bay, rushing for 147 yards and scoring on runs of 55 and 69 yards. The Jets have had issues stopping the run, currently ranking 25th in rush defense. To further complicate matters, defensive tackle Harrison Phillips is dealing with a foot injury and is questionable. They are still adjusting to life without Quinnen Williams, and losing Phillips would be a critical setback. Furthermore, the Jets are reassessing linebacker roles after benching Quincy Williams last week only to reinstate him later in the game.

Costello’s Call

Sometimes, a matchup feels like it’s going to unfold a certain way—and it usually does. This seems to be one of those games.

The Patriots are gaining momentum while the Jets are struggling. And with this game being in Foxboro on a short week, it doesn’t bode well for them.

It feels ages since the Jets have had an edge. Patriots take it.
