F1 Drivers’ Championship standings: Is it possible for Lando Norris to win a title in Las Vegas?

And now there are three.

With just three races left on the 2025 F1 calendar, the competition for the Drivers’ Championship has narrowed down to three drivers. Following the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, George Russell has been officially eliminated from the title race, leaving Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri, and Max Verstappen to battle it out for the championship.

Here’s a quick glance at the current standings and whether Norris, who is leading the championship, can secure the title in the upcoming Las Vegas Grand Prix.

What are the standings in the F1 Drivers’ Championship?

Norris had a fantastic performance in the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, winning both the F1 sprint race and the main event. He currently has a 24-point lead over Piastri, while Verstappen is trailing by 49 points.

Position Driver Team Points
1 Lando Norris McLaren 390
2 Oscar Piastri McLaren 366
3 Max Verstappen Red Bull 341
4 George Russell Mercedes 276
5 Charles Leclerc Ferrari 214
6 Lewis Hamilton Ferrari 148
7 Kimi Antonelli Mercedes 122
8 Alexander Albon Williams 73
9 Nico Hulkenberg Sauber 43
10 Isaac Hajar VCARB 43
11 Oliver Bearman Hearth 40
12 Fernando Alonso Aston Martin 40
13 Carlos Sainz Jr. Williams 38
14 Liam Lawson VCARB 36
15 Lance Stroll Aston Martin 32
16 Esteban Ocon Hearth 30
17 Hiroki Tsunoda Red Bull 28
18 Pierre Gasly Takayama 22
19 Gabriel Bortleto Sauber 19
20 Franco Colapinto Takayama 0
21 Jack Doohan Takayama 0

Aside from the top three drivers, there are a few other points of interest. Nico Hulkenberg and Izak Hajar are tied at 43 points this season, but Hulkenberg holds the tiebreaker thanks to higher placements in earlier races. Both had finishes of third in different races, yet Hulkenberg’s recent performances have been slightly stronger.

Similarly, Oliver Bearman and Fernando Alonso are neck-and-neck, with both scoring 40 points. Alonso’s best finish came fifth at the Hungarian GP, while Bearman managed to snag fourth in Mexico City, giving him the edge in any potential tiebreaker.

Will Lando Norris win the title at the Las Vegas Grand Prix?

So, can Lando Norris, after winning consecutive Grand Prix races plus the F1 sprint in Sao Paulo, clinch the Drivers’ Championship at the upcoming race in Las Vegas?

While we hate to keep you in suspense, there’s still a bit of a wait ahead, especially for Norris fans.

Over the final three race weekends, drivers can earn up to 83 points. The Grand Prix winner will take home 25 points, and the F1 Sprint winner in Qatar can snag another 8 points. After Las Vegas, there are 58 points up for grabs in the last two races, meaning a lot can still change.

If Norris wins in Las Vegas and scores maximum points while Piastri and Verstappen finish out of the points, the gap between Norris and Piastri would extend to 49 points. Nevertheless, this would still leave Piastri in contention for the title.

In this case, Verstappen would slip 74 points behind Norris, which might seem unlikely given his strong record in Las Vegas over the past two seasons, where he won the first Las Vegas Grand Prix in 2023.

Now, if Norris were to win the 2025 Drivers’ Championship, the earliest this could happen would be during the F1 sprint in Qatar. If Norris achieves a victory in Las Vegas and Piastri doesn’t score, Norris would need to secure just two more points than Piastri in the F1 sprint race to seize the title.

However, considering the tiebreaker rules, if Norris were to finish just slightly behind Piastri in points, the outcome could hinge on future race results. For example, if Piastri wins both remaining races and Norris doesn’t place in the points, it would leave them tied on points, but Piastri would win on the number of Grand Prix wins this season.

Circumstances could shift dramatically depending on the performances of each driver over the next races.

To sum it up: there’s a lot at stake. A lot can happen in F1 racing, and predicting outcomes is challenging, to say the least. But if all goes in Norris’s favor in Las Vegas, he might be lifting that title sooner than anyone expected.
