Fact-Checking on Epstein Revelations
On Wednesday, CNN’s Pamela Brown fact-checked Texas Democratic Representative Jasmine Crockett, who claimed that Republicans had redacted Virginia Giuffre’s name, a victim of Jeffrey Epstein.
House Democrats unveiled emails from Epstein suggesting that Trump was aware of his actions and mingled with his victims at his residence. During an appearance on “The Situation Room,” Crockett indicated that Republicans might be concealing Giuffre’s name to shield Trump. However, Brown pointed out that Giuffre herself stated Trump had not done anything wrong.
“The email on the screen shows: she wrote a book but didn’t accuse him of anything,” Brown noted. “Could you confirm that?” she asked. Crockett, seemingly unsure, responded, “Yes, I don’t know. Obviously, the victim’s identity is redacted, so that’s not necessarily the case. We should take the Republicans at their word about what was edited. But I don’t get why they always edit names,” she added, mentioning that the individual in question has passed away.
In response to Crockett’s claims, Brown asserted, “But the Democrats did it.” Crockett continued to suggest that Republicans were safeguarding Trump by withholding relevant documents.
“I think we should really discuss this,” Crockett said. “The president has tried to label it all as a hoax. I cannot believe so many lives are lost due to misinformation. I doubt anyone is hiding files related to a supposed hoax. I know there’s something significant here. His own Attorney General had to acknowledge he was mentioned in those files. Clearly, they’re trying to conceal something.”
Crockett elaborated, “The only reason we have these emails is because we retrieved them from their property, not because of the Department of Justice’s efforts. It’s not Kash Patel’s fault that the information got released despite a subpoena from the Oversight Committee. He still withholds information.”
On July 28, Trump claimed that Biden’s administration would have had no qualms about releasing files if they contained damaging information against him. The Biden administration did retain those files, though they were not made public.
Democrats had redacted Giuffre’s name previously. In an email from 2011, Trump denied engaging in any sexual conduct with victims during his association with Epstein. Giuffre tragically took her own life in April at the age of 41.
Giuffre mentioned, “Donald Trump was also a good friend of Jeffrey’s. He didn’t have sexual relations with any of us, but he did flirt with me. He would joke with Jeffrey that he had a life.”
In a December 15, 2015 email, anti-Trump author Michael Wolff seemed to give advice on how to potentially blackmail Epstein if he denied connections to Trump. “I think he should hang himself,” Wolff wrote. “If he claims he hasn’t been on a plane or gone home, that gives him valuable PR and political leverage.”
Trump told reporters on July 29 that he distanced himself from Epstein after the latter allegedly “stole” a female staff member from Mar-a-Lago, believed to be Giuffre. Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s business associate, said in a July 24 deposition that Trump was always a “gentleman” and that she never witnessed any inappropriate behavior from him.
In interviews with NBC News on September 3, multiple victims denied having seen or heard of any wrongdoing by Trump during his friendship with Epstein.
